In Santiago

Yesterday, for our last movie night at home with Zaffy, we rented Rapa Nui http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110944/

a 1994 movie (produced by Kevin Costner a.o.) based on the stories told by Heyerdahl. We worried that the movie might ruin our first view of the island, but decided to risk it for background. In the end it gave a lively introduction to the mysteries of the island set in the magnificent nature we're about to explore. The production, it appeared, had some challenges. The actors had to wear very little clothes and must have been selected for their splendid physiques and a credible "Polynesian" look, leaving little room to worry about their accents in spoken English, which were all over the place - British, Australian, American.

Today we catch a noon flight to Santiago and relax for its 4 1/2 duration reading our travel books.

The LATAM food service is spartan - one ham sandwich on a white roll 😣. As a result we're starving when we reach our charming Le Reve hotel in Providencia. I had found a much lauded vegetarian restaurant, El Huerto, https://www.elhuerto.cl on Tripadvisor, and we are delighted when we see it right across the street from our hotel. The food is spectacular, from the guacamole and the mezzes, through our main courses to the desserts, cheesecake and crêpes with dulce de leche and walnut. Our server, Bernadita, has a discreet tattoo of three parallel lines on her ear. She says they're an ancient symbol of earth - "tierra" - and asks us to bring back a shell from Easter Island.
